Perhaps you already know about the QQQ.
But have you heard of QQQJ?
If not, we will introduce QQQJ in this article and compare it to its bigger brother, QQQ.
Contents
The exchange-traded fund (ETF), going by the ticker QQQJ, has been called “QQQ Junior”.
Whether that nickname is belittling or not is a matter of debate.
Perhaps that is what some people think the trailing “J” stands for.
Invesco, the financial management company that runs the QQQJ fund, does NOT call it “junior” on the fund’s spec page.
The fund’s official name is “Nasdaq Next Generation 100 ETF”, a name which might command better attention.
QQQ Tracks The NDX Index
Before getting into QQQJ, we first need to know what QQQ is.
The QQQ is an ETF that tracks the Nasdaq-100 index (symbol NDX).
Nasdaq, being the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations, is a global electronic stock exchange based in the United States, where roughly 4,000 stocks are traded.
One hundred of those stocks are selected to be included in the Nasdaq-100 index.
These hundred stocks are selected to be large non-financial companies that are growth-oriented.
The technology sector is the largest constituent of the Nasdaq-100, with top holdings being Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), NVIDIA (NDVA), Amazon (AMZN), Broadcom (AVGO), Meta (META), and Netflix (NFLX).
Hence, QQQ is known as the technology ETF.
Nevertheless, the Nasdaq-100 does contain stock from other sectors such as healthcare, consumer discretionary and staples, industrial, etc.
But nothing from the financial sectors because those are tracked in a separate Nasdaq Financial-100 Index.
QQQJ Tracks The NGX Index
The QQQJ is an ETF that tracks the Nasdaq Next Generation 100 Index (symbol NGX).
NGX is the index comprising the next 100 non-financial stocks on the Nasdaq that did not make it to the Nasdaq-100.
QQQJ is analogous to being the little brother of QQQ.
They are similar in that they are both heavily weighted in technology but can contain other sectors (excluding financials).
They look the same but are not identical:
One share of QQQ costs about $500, whereas one share of QQQJ costs $30 (as of March 2025).
While the average age gap between human siblings is two to three years, the age gap between QQQ and QQQJ is one year and seven months.
The inception date of QQQ is March 10, 1999 (before the COVID-19 pandemic).
The inception date of its younger sibling, QQQJ, is October 13, 2020 (post-pandemic).
