What Is VIX?

VIX is an index that represents the market expectations for volatility over the next 30 days.

This index is derived directly from a large basket of different SPX options.

This allows the index to consider things such as skew and curvature.

Essentially it provides a good overall picture of implied volatility across the S&P 500 surface.

Therefore, the VIX shows a snapshot of implied volatility for the S&P 500.

VIX Expiration Details

VIX options (and VIX futures, for that matter) typically expire on Wednesday, with the last full day of trading being Tuesday.

Expiration dates are the same for VIX futures and VIX options.

The standard expiration date is 30 days before SPX option expiration, although bank holidays can impact this.

The expiration date for VIX futures and VIX options is usually 30 days before the Third Friday of the next month.

Expiring futures contracts cease trading at 8:00 am Chicago time / 9:00 am New York time on the final settlement day.

Expiring options cease trading at the close of the regular trading session the day before.

Weekly VIX Options

Weekly VIX options started trading on October 8th, 2015.

Expiration dates follow the same rules and the regular monthly options and is always 30 days before the weekly SPX option expiration.

Like monthly VIX options, this is usually a Wednesday, unless there is a bank holiday.

The VIX expiration calendars below, only display the monthly expiration dates.
